Life Coaching
As basis of life coaching, the Enneagram archetypal framework is used. The focus of the coaching is on personal development and growth. The Enneagram is a useful tool for understanding both the “upside” and “downside” of our personality styles.
The need of most individuals who enrol for life coaching has a desire for deeper self-knowledge, self-development and growth. The specific need of every individual is considered as the basis of the coaching.
Introduction to the Enneagram
The Enneagram is an archetypal framework that offers in-depth insight to individuals, groups and collectives. Consisting of three centres of intelligence, nine main Enneagram types, 18 wings, three subtypes and Triadic styles, the Enneagram offers a rich map to personal development from an open systems perspective. It does not box in people, but rather opens a pathway to self-discovery and greater personal awareness.
The Integrative Enneagram creates self-awareness and uncovers the patterns of behaviour that sub-consciously drive and motivate us to act in certain ways. When we make these patterns and motivations conscious, we are able to transcend them and develop richer, more supportive ways of being. Working with the Enneagram empowers individuals to take responsibility for their own behaviours and growth, from a greater understanding of why they act and react the way they do.
As a framework, the Enneagram also speaks to the journey of integration and development in a profound way. It is able to uncover the uniqueness of each individual and his/her journey. It does not only reveal what holds an individual back, but also offers insights into the journey towards strength and liberation, connecting us to our strengths and higher selves.
The Enneagram is, therefore, a sense-making tool or a framework that enables the development of self-knowledge and meta-awareness.

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
As the workplace becomes more diverse, it becomes increasingly important to understand what makes people behave differently and to know how to manage these differences effectively.
Conflict is inherent in an organisational system, inevitably conflict increases as diversity increases. It is common for people to disagree and be in conflict. Managers need to be skilled in managing conflict effectively. Conflict can be functional or dysfunctional-depending on the management thereof.
The course introduces Polarity Management as a tool in managing conflicts. There is a significant competitive advantage in distinguishing between a problem to solve and a polarity to manage and the ability to manage both effectively. Polarity management supports the concept of Systems Thinking which looks at the bigger picture. The awareness that the solution to conflicts or problems lies not in a simple either -or answer. What is important, is that we recognize the phenomena of interdependent opposites in managing conflicts in a transformational way.
POLARITY MANAGEMENT: IDENTIFYING AND MANAGING UNSOLVABLE PROBLEMS
Developed by Dr. Barry Johnson
What is Polarity Management?
Polarities are interdependent pairs of values or points of view. They need each other over time to gain and maintain performance. Polarities are important because they need each other, and they are interdependent. Polarities are all about managing relationships Both sides/values exist and one is not more important than the other. Polarities are simply energy interdependent, one without the other means you only know half the picture. The difference between problem solving and polarity thinking is:
- Problem solving is about “either/or” thinking.
- Polarity thinking is about “both/and” thinking
Polarity thinking touches many aspects of our lives such as:
- Personal preferences
- Group dynamics
- Organisational issues
- National and global policies
Polarity Management involves identifying when a problem is unsolvable. Instead of tackling the question, “How can we try to solve this problem?” management focuses on the question, “Is this a problem which can be solved?”
Barry Johnson in his book, `Polarity Management-Identifying and Managing Unsolvable Problems’ identifies four questions to ask to determine whether a problem is solvable or not. If the answer to all these questions are “yes” it could be seen as a dilemma
Is the problem ongoing?
Yes. For example when the polarity of quality versus revenue are investigated. Quality suffer when volume increases in the case where stakeholders are convinced volume must increase to gain more revenue and keep the doors open. There is no concrete endpoint to these arguments.
Lastly, will focusing on the upside of one point of view to the neglect of the other undermine the organization’s efforts to be successful?
Focusing only on improving quality may de-stabilise efforts to meet the needs of consumers in a growth industry. Likewise, focusing only on increasing revenue may result in staff burnout and loss of subject matter experts.
